    COS Advanced Course on Community Health

    Welcome to this Certificate of Open Studies delivered by InZone and the University of Geneva for learners in Jordan, Kenya, Bangladesh and Chad.

    Welcome

    InZone is a programme run by the University of Geneva to provide higher education to refugees. This Community Health Course has been running since 2023 and is delivered in refugee camps through local InZone sites.

    The course is interdisciplinary, with nearly 40 experts from 10 institutions. It combines online learning, Speak Up Zoom sessions, practical workshops, group activities, quizzes and a final project.

    • Before Module 1: Pre-test & Go

      Before accessing the first module, learners complete a short reflective activity and a pre-test quiz. The quiz has one attempt, a 40-minute time limit and does not count toward the final course grade.

  • Module 1. Introduction to Community Health

    What you will be able to do

    • Understand what community health is about and describe the role of Community Health Workers.
    • Identify communication, advocacy and supervision practices useful for CHWs.
    • Reflect on UNHCR community health guidance in refugee settings.
    • Recognise health priorities in disaster settings and relate them to community action.
    • Prepare for basic clinical skills, planetary health and participatory visual methodologies.

  • Module 3. Pregnancy, Maternal and Newborn Health

    What you will be able to do

    • Know the risks for women of having a high number of births and the advantages of adequate birth spacing.
    • Know how to recognise signs of pregnancy, how to support a healthy pregnancy, and how to recognise common problems and danger signs.
    • Understand the impact of key infectious diseases on pregnant women and babies, and know the role of the CHW in their prevention and management.
    • Know the key steps in the care of mothers after delivery, and how to support families to care for babies at home.

  • Module 4. Child Health

    What you will be able to do

    • Classify children into age groups.
    • Be familiar with common childhood illnesses (causes, signs, and management).
    • Know the vaccine preventable diseases, their vaccines and timetable.
    • Understand the importance of childhood nutrition and when supplementary feeding may be required.
